How to Administer Reading Placement Test

Decoding and Comprehension Placement Process

For intensive instruction in the Corrective Reading program

For students who struggle significantly with reading, it is appropriate to address their decoding issues first.  Once decoding is in place, it is appropriate to address issues of comprehension if they are significant.

Please administer the Decoding Placement test before giving the Comprehension Placement test.  If the student places in the decoding program, there is no need to give the placement test for the comprehension until the student has completed the decoding strand of the program.  Once the decoding strand is complete for that student, the comprehension placement test should be administered to determine if the student could benefit from instruction in the intensive comprehension program.  If the students does not place in the decoding program, but struggles significantly with reading, it is appropriate to administer the Comprehension placement test to determine if placement in this program is suitable for the student.
